Gibran: A Child of Life
Norwood, Massachusetts Saturday, October 1st 2005 On Saturday October 1st 2005, the Norwood Historical Society sponsored a professional production of the play A Child of Life in order to reach out to supports for its "Save the Day" capital campaign. A Child of Life, is a critically acclaimed play about the life of Kahlil Gibran (author of The Prophet) written and performed by dramatist Michel El-Ashkar. This professional production is a dramatic interpretation in two acts that chronicles the highlights of Kahlil Gibran's life and sheds light on the pivotal people who crossed his path, including his first mentor, Fred Holland Day of Norwood who introduced the talented immigrant boy from Lebanon to art and literature and launched him on his life path as a creative artist and writer. El-Ashkar, who has performed the play in major cities around the world and won praise from Los Angeles to London, feels a special joy in bringing the play to Norwood. Proceeds of the play benefits the Society’s campaign to preserve and restore the weathered exterior of the Day House, including its Tudor half-timbering and lovely leaded-glass windows. The house, on the National Register of Historic Places, is distinguished both for its unique architectural and design features and for its connection with Day, who enjoyed a world-wide reputation as a photographer and publisher little recognized by his fellow Norwood citizens.
The American Lebanese Engineering Society (Boston chapter) supported this event and was present there.
