Annual Dinner 2006 - Scholarship Award Winners Introduction

It is a great honor and pleasure to have this opportunity to represent the American Lebanese Engineering Society, and its benefactors in presenting this year’s scholarship awards.

Each year the American Lebanese Engineering Society endeavors to recognize distinguished Lebanese and Lebanese American Students who are pursuing an education in engineering and related sciences.

The Award committee looks for those students who exemplify the ambitious and hard working Lebanese spirit, have demonstrated strong leadership qualities, care for the Lebanese community and distinguished Academic achievements.

I have had the privilege to be involved with this process for a number of years. And every year the impressive achievements of these young students continue to amaze and inspire me.  Although the process of selecting just a few students out of the many who are all exemplary in their achievements is very difficult, it always leaves you with the best feeling of pride as you review the accomplishments of each and everyone of these students.

This year we are very happy to announce the formation of our first dedicated scholarship fund established to honor the memory of the late Charles Zraket., thanks to the Generosity of tonight’s guest of Honor, Mr Nassib Chamoun.

To Nassib, Mr. Zraket, was an inspiration, a mentor and a friend.  His impressive life long achievements are inspirational to all engineers. With a Bachelor of Science degree from Northeastern University and a Masters of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The late Mr. Charles Zraket went on to lo lead a very successful and accomplished life.  At the time of his passing, he was Scholar-in-Residence at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, a Trustee and past President and Chief Executive Officer of The MITRE Corporation. Trustee and advisor of numerous scientific institutes, and the recipient of the US Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service.  The American Lebanese Engineering Society, is very grateful to Mr. Nassib Chamoun for his gift.

Also this year we are very fortunate to receive a generous donation from one of our permanent members and a Northeastern University classmate, Mr. George Jreige.   Before the dinner tonight, George has also informed us that he is pledging the same amount for the next five years. We thank George for his generosity and support.  His donation along with funds raised from this event will allow us to provide the “ALES yearly award” to a second student.  We also thank our members and friends for your support.

With that I would like to first announce the recipient of the “Charles Zraket Scholarship award” Mr. Ghassan Fayad.

Ghassan is currently pursuing a Doctorate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

He has a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Balamand, Lebanon, where he graduated with distinction, Dual Masters degrees in Civil and Mechanical engineering from the University of Maine, graduating with a perfect score.

Ghassan’s academic interests and accomplishments are too numerous and impressive to be able to capture them in few words, they exemplify the curious mind that drives the type of research that leads to breakthroughs and advances in technology.  Please join me in congratulating Ghassan and wishing him the continuous success in his endeavors.

And now I like to Announce the recipient of the “ALES General Scholarship award” Mr. Ibrahim Jreige.

Ibrahim graduated with high distinction, from the American University Of Beirut earning a Bachelor's degree in Computer and Communications Engineering, where he was consistently on the Dean's Honor List for outstanding academic achievement.   He completed summer internships at the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom and at Cambridge Energy Solutions in the USA.  Ibrahim is currently attending Harvard University and pursuing his Master's degree in Engineering Sciences.

Thank you.
