Back
from the "Busy" Summer Break
(ALES Events
and Affairs)
Summer is over.
Welcome back! This was supposed to be a quiet and relaxing summer for all of
us; well, it was not. We hope you and your families had a safe summer.
Lebanon was under
severe attacks from air, sea, and land for more than a month between
July 12 and August 13 2006. More than 1,000 civilians were killed, more than
3,000 were injured, about 1,000,000 people were displaced, more than 30,000
residential units were damaged or destroyed, many roads and most bridges were
destroyed, and a lot of the infrastructure was damaged. During the early
days of the crisis, after hearing the sad news and seeing the heartbreaking
images coming from our homeland, we, at ALES, felt that all Lebanese organizations, political or not, should use
their resources and networks to Help Lebanon as much as possible, and that it
was our duty to be a positive factor and cooperate with the major efforts to
Help Lebanon.
Now that the
summer is over (and the war is over, thank God), we had our first board
meeting for the 2006-2007 term last Thursday. It was a busy meeting with a lot
on the
agenda, and it went very well. The meeting minutes will be posted under
the Meetings section in few days.

Follow-up on the 'Oil-Spill
Clean-up...' Initiative
(ALES Events
and Affairs)
As a follow-up on the 'Oil-Spill
Clean-up Along Lebanon's Coastline' initiative that ALES launched in
August of this year,
we are pleased to announce that one
of our members, Dr. Michel Boufadel (Temple University, Philadelphia),
visited Lebanon in early September based on an official invitation from
the Ministry of Environment. Dr. Boufadel is a world-renowned expert in
remediating oil spills, and is the immediate past president of
ALES. During Dr. Boufadel's visit to Lebanon, he joined a team of
experts and met with various officials, providing advice on the removal
of oil.
Dr. Boufadel is part of
a technical team formed by ALES to deal with the oil spill issue in
Lebanon. The team included two other members of ALES, Dr. Mahmood
Nachabe of University of South Florida and Dr. Rabih Mohtar of Purdue
University.
