ALES' Rebuild-Lebanon Dinner & Presentation

(ALES Events and Affairs)

Dear ALES colleagues and friends,

Please join us at ALES' Rebuild-Lebanon Dinner & Presentation on Tuesday December 12 at 6:30PM at Sabra Restaurant on 45 Union Street in Newton MA [Map. Phone: 617.964.9275].

A talk, titled Challenges and Opportunities after the July 2006 War: Rebuilding the Roads and Bridges of Lebanon, will be presented by two engineers from ALES, outlining the challenges and opportunities for rebuilding Lebanon’s destroyed infrastructure, in particular the roads and bridges, after the July 2006 war.

The speakers are:

  • Mr. Nabil Hourani, PE; Head of the Geotechnical Section at the Massachusetts Highway Department

  • Mr. Charles Sacre, PE; Principal Engineer at S.E.A. Consultants

The presentation will address a number of issues and questions, mainly:

  • What really happened to the many bridges and roadways that were affected?

  • How is the infrastructure now, and how was it developed in the previous decade?

  • Is there hope in the early recovery work, and what is the preliminary assessment?

  • Is there a plan for the future for funding, designing, bidding, and rebuilding the bridges?

  • How do we get the generous donors to give more?

  • Accountability, leadership, and dedication... How would it advance the reconstruction?

The registration fee is $20 for members and $30 for non-members, and it includes a Lebanese dinner.

Please RSVP at ales@alesonline.org or 617.435.8687 at your earliest convenience.

We look forward to seeing you at this event.

Best Regards,

Hani Al-Dayaa

'Bosta' @ MIT (Beirut Uncut Film Series)

In launching the
Beirut Uncut Film Series
you are invited to attend Boston’s first public screening of

BOSTA
a Philippe Aractingi Production

Wednesday . Nov 15 . 8pm . Free . 54-100 at MIT

(Map: http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?selection=54)

After 15 years of exile in France, Kamal returns to Beirut with his mind set on one goal: recreate the dance group he had formed with his school friends and whom he hasn't seen since - but today, not only does he want to bring back this disparate group together, but also take the bold move of introducing a Western flavor to the traditional Dabkeh music.

When the dancers audition before the jury of the national Dabkeh festival, they are curtly rejected on the basis that they are causing prejudice to the "only cultural icon left". This prompts them to refurbish their old school bus and embark on a road trip across Lebanese towns to perform and introduce their pioneering dance to the public.

As they struggle to win people over to their alternative spirit, each of the dancers also realizes that they have also embarked on a personal journey to reconnect with their childhood, their friendships lost and found, the pains of the war and of separation... a journey that will lead a group of friends to turn the page on a painful past.

Bosta is a road musical that takes the audience on a wonderful journey across various Lebanese regions... a journey accompanied by a groundbreaking soundtrack and, of course, this truly pioneering dance, the electro-dabkeh.
